Ok let's pause of that for a moment.
The people who are giving away their stuff for free have a different source of income which enables them to give away their stuff for free.
If you don't have an alternative (and lucrative) means of income besides what you are giving away for free - you are stupid.
Don't give away stuff for free just because it is "trendy" to do so. You might be in for a nasty surprise.
Sadly, I don't much agree with your opinion there. Most of what I do is open source and I earn from it as well. I give it away to help make people's lives better. Those who care, do pay for it, in one way or another. But I get where you are coming from, and the burnout surprise you're talking about. Been there done that.
That's exactly what I'm talking about - you've ALREADY figured out a way of getting paid for the "free" stuff you do. That of course is the ideal situation.
Unless you are in that phase already, giving away stuff for free is a very dangerous game. So much so that you've been there yourself.
They are innovative and creative. They want to grow together and change the world by helping others.
