Integrating Google Analytics without Any Plugins

The "without a plugin" version suggests directly editing your theme file...which will get overwritten if there are any updates, leaving you wondering why your site suddenly has no visitors.

Yea, I was thinking the same, surely you could do that, back in days, maybe in 2010 this could be an option where there could not have auto-update, and there was no solution for getting the whole Google Analytics Dashboard inside your WordPress Dashboard, now that it possible and there are many good free solution, still hard coding seems little back-dated. Unless you have specific reason.

You could hard-code it, but if you aren't using a child theme, you'd want to do it in a plugin that you wrote yourself. And I'm not sure there's a particularly compelling reason to do that instead of using something like Headers and Footers or one of the GA-specific plugins.
