How do you perceive GoDaddy as your (potential) partner and provider of tools and services?

Hey everyone

I am interested in how do you perceive GoDaddy's brand giving it a simple score from 1 to 100 (100 being best) and why?

Looking to gather as much as feedback possible. Don't be shy, open up :)

I've been a GoDaddy customer for a little over 10 years. It started with domain names, then hosting a few small sites on their shared Linux hosting, and now having referred a handful of clients to their Managed WordPress hosting platform.

I used to despise their old brand, and the advertising that went along with it. But I've seen all the changes happening with the new leadership that came in a few years ago.

One of their senior VPs commented on a blog post I did comparing their speed with that of WP Engine's. I've had numerous fantastic interactions with members of their support team, where they've given me their direct line & email, and gone above and beyond to help. And my cousin got a job on their security team about a year ago, and raves about what it's like to work there (and he has pretty high standards).

Their UI has been continually improving for the better part of two years. Their managed WordPress product is incredibly easy to use. They are very active in the community, participating here on this site, commenting on WP-related blogs/forums, sponsoring prominent WordPress folks to contribute to core.

They are aware of the negative perceptions people have from how they did things in the past, and they aren't afraid to acknowledge them. From what I've seen, they are listening to the community, and trying to improve.

With all that being said, I think their product offerings still leave a little to be desired. They don't support PHP 7 yet, nor do they offer free SSL certs via Let's Encrypt. I realize selling SSLs is probably a large part of their business, but it's tough to compare free vs. $70/yr. when I'm trying to recommend hosting to my clients & colleagues.

But in terms of their BRAND, which was the initial question, I'd give them very high ratings. I hope to see them continue down the path they are currently on, and hopefully never turn into something like that of EIG.

Thanks Dave. SSL is a big pain and a large business on its own but I think we are about to solve that. It goes without saying that next generation WordPress hosting will support PHP7. Stay tuned.

12 out of 100 - Brand is bad enough in my experience to walk away from ManageWP when they purchased it. I was happy for you, but couldn't bring myself to use a Godaddy product or service. And it's not just their history, though that certainly plays a huge part in it. But even recently (a few months ago, maybe, don't remember exactly), I had to deal with a client whose PHP version was very old, and it was the highest available. Again, I don't remember the details right now, but it was frustrating, and just typical of all of the Godaddy issues over the years. There's no point in rehashing all of the past woes. Bad company, bad product, bad service. Just can't get past all of it. Sorry.

I don't have much opinion of them either way now. I had a couple of domains with them and using their old admin interface was horrible. It was hard to find the simple things I wanted to do, and they were spending more time upselling new stuff than letting me get on with managing my domains. Then there's all the ethics and stuff - dodgy adverts that were all about boobs rather than the product, the ceo who was a scumbag etc.

Over the last couple of years they seem to have been making big steps to improve their image (presumably why you have asked this). I no longer use their service but the adverts have improved massively, and their participation in the WordPress community appears genuine.

I think it will take a lot to get past the negative feelings people had of them in the past but they are heading in the right direction.

They are a direct competitor
They have a dire reputation, which while have had some brand reputation improvements still to many horror services
They are a US based company which immediately opens up data protection issues
Their purchasing strategy while positive in that they are picking good companies (High ManageWP peeps) hasn't yet shown how they will gut those companies long term.

We would have been interested in working with several of their now subsumed companies historically prior to being bought. However there is no amount of assurances about their independence that I think we would trust given who the parent is.

Zero. I will not use GoDaddy. Any clients I pick up that are on GoDaddy I spend my first few hours with, migrating them to other services.

This is about "voting with your dollars". Their stance on pretty much everything related to internet regulations and laws has been wrong. I took part in the boycott over their support of SOPA. They only reversed their public opinion on this when they lost over 37,000 domains.

They were caught at one point buying domains that you searched for, if you didn't buy them at that time. So when you returned to the service and searched again the price was way higher now because it was a premium domain that they owned. This is unethical, and a sign of who the company really is. Again, another one where they changed their ways after public outcry. But that outcry shouldn't have been necessary.

How about the former CEO's elephant hunting videos? The sexist commercials? Sure Bob Parsons is gone now, but most of the company wasn't replaced and they all had a part to play in his ethics and their effect on the companies brand and image. None of them stopped it.

I could go on, there are a thousand more reasons, most of them ethical, some of them technical. But to keep this from being a novel I will just reiterate it is definitely a 0 out of 100.

In the past the wisdom was "OK for domain name purchases, but not for hosting." Just this morning I saw someone ask for a recommendation for domain name registrar and there was a wall of people with bad GoDaddy domain name experiences.

In any large business there will be "fails". Some are self-inflicted and others are customers who are difficult to please, BUT it is how you deal with those fails that separates the winners from the losers. I don't get the impression that GoDaddy is aggressive enough about turning "fails" into wins.

PHP 7 has been out for a year and a half and Let's Encrypt for a year. If those still aren't available then it is hard to claim to be a technology leader.

That being said, I am using ManageWP.com and have been happy with it. I'm glad they let it remain independent. So currently I'm a 100% likely to use one of their services and 0% likely to use others.

I'm in the odd situation of thinking well enough of GoDaddy as a whole--the company has become active in the WP community, sponsored a lot of WordCamps, and made some forward-thinking acquisitions--while at the same time detesting its hosting more each day. And their relentless up-selling makes it annoying to purchase domain names from them. I love ManageWP, but apart from that, I wouldn't recommend their services.

I've been using GoDaddy for years, mainly for domains (had done experience with their email services).

I think the company is doing lots of efforts to make the GoDaddy brand more appealing over the past 3 years, and it's clear that they became more community feedback driven.

Following GoDaddy's business side of things, I like what they do, and even though it may be perceived as too aggressive in terms of sales and marketing, the bottom line is that every person in the world knows the brand.

I actually did an experiment setting up WP hosting on some of the major mass market hosting companies (GoDaddy, Bluehost, SiteGround, WPE), and the onboarding experience and customer support of GoDaddy was really good (and fast).

I don't deal with many sites so I don't have the experience that freelancers/agencies have. But from the experience I have with the company, I think the brand is going towards the right direction and I always manged to achieve what I intended and for very affordable price.

I'll give GoDaddy a 50/100. I don't hate the company, but I definitely don't love it.

24/7 telephone tech support is unusual and welcomed. It's one reason I might recommend GoDaddy to a client that needs hand holding, but doesn't want someone to manage their site for them. That's probably the only time I would consider recommending the company though. However, I don't usually seek to move clients with GoDaddy already to another service. In fact, I have bought a bunch of GoDaddy services for clients that needed upgrading including moving to cPanel hosting (ugh).

For the same money as GoDaddy costs for hosting, I can get faster, just as high uptime service. GoDaddy comes out worse when you factor in flexibility and cost with things like SSL and Email.

GoDaddy Pro is a smart concept, but it is still complicated enough for clients to give rights, that they end up just sending me their login credentials (including access to paying for services). I can authorize myself, but I usually don't bother.

As far as brand, the Itty Bitty Ballers concept is good. They should do more to promote the charity aspect and keep the figurines in stock. One option to improving the brand is to just take the time needed. However, I think the company should push harder to be seen as a community leader. They've got to do a lot to get me to forget SOPA, elephants and banned tv ads. Maybe the company could take the lead in educating small businesses that unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth is not unlimited in other ways. Dove has proved you can succeed with a more honest approach -- it would be cool if GoDaddy used this strategy.

I should mention that whenever I make these kinds of balanced kind of comments online somewhere, people jump all over me with hate. To say that GoDaddy is not well loved by the geek chattering class would be an understatement.
