WordPress Plugin vs Functions.php file (Which is better?)

wpbeginner.com | May. 3, 2018 | 6 min read

short but excellent write-up from WP Beginner which ties in with the endless debate of how many plugins can I run on my website, or I already have too many plugins installed.

As with so many posts of this type, the title sets up a false dichotomy. Some code belongs in a plugin, and as long as the code quality is the same, it doesn't matter whether it's your plugin or someone else's. Some code belongs in a theme, whether you add it or the original theme developer puts it there. The article does do a good job of explaining the differences between these two possible places to add your custom code.
