Does WordPress Hold You Back as a Developer, Really?

Tom McFarlin points out that we shouldn't use backward compatibility as an excuse to keep from learning newer PHP techniques. It's not WordPress itself that holds us back as developers, but our own attitudes and habits.

Why do all single-author WordPress community blogs not have comments anymore? It's weird to me.

No idea. I have comments open on my blog and get quite a few of them on the tutorial posts.

I would never get rid of comments at this point. They are a great insight into what problems people are facing.
