Why You Should Be Using Locally Hosted Gravatars

okaymarketing.com | Dec. 28, 2014 | 4 min read

I shaved off 2 seconds from my WordPress site's load time simply by switching to locally hosted gravatars. 15+ redirects and 20+ DNS requests to gravatar's servers was ridiculous! Follow my tutorial to easily fix the problem.

Wow, that is crazy that you can speed up a site by that much. I've been using the WP User Avatar plugin, wordpress.org/plugins/wp-user-avatar/, but it recently caused a site of mine to slow to a crawl and not even be able to load the dashboard.

Ya it was pretty crazy how much of a delay the redirects and DNS requests were causing from the gravatar domain... I ran this test multiple times with prefetching disabled to verify. Your results might vary but I guarantee you will see faster speeds.

That's odd, I haven't had any problems with the WP User Avatar plugin. Are you positive that is what is causing the issue?
