No One Wants Plugins, They Want Solutions

As those who sell WordPress products, we need to stop thinking in terms of plugins or themes & start thinking in terms of solutions. It’s tempting to try and be a one stop shop, but together we can do better.

Quite a long read but a very informative one. Challenges the mindset behind themes and plugins and proposes an interesting, wholesome way of looking at things. I agree with this, though it truly is an uphill task, one that'll have to be refined as it's tested

Interestingly, changed my opinion a bit after reading this: nickhaskins.com/2015/02/on-theme-functionality Nick points out something quite interesting about the user needing to "spread their trust" across all the plugin authors

Thanks for that link, I missed that article. It's a good counter point though I think our points are similar -- that users need a solution, and it needs to be delivered responsibly.
